2018 Team Record/ Info:
2019 Team Outlook – The Conway Tigers will look to build off of a playoff run in 2018 which included a huge upset over the #1 ranked Summerville Green Wave. The Tigers did graduate five seniors but will return several players with playing experience. One strength for the Tigers will be on the mound. Will Smith (CCU) will be the ace and will look to build on a strong 2018. Also returning on the mount with experience will be Jeremy Jones (Jr), Zack Lee (Jr), Tonka Hemingway (Jr), Dylan Hanes (Sr), and the closer from last season Brendan Batten (Sr). The Tigers also picked up a transfer in junior Cameron Barnhill. Barnhill is working to get back into the pitching rotation and hopes to be ready to toe the rubber by the mid to end of the season. The Tigers will also rely on some newcomers to help bolster the pitching staff in Preston Spangler (Jr), Corbin McCarty (Jr), and Logan Pruett (Jr).
On the infield, the Tigers return shortstop senior, Jordan Hilburn. Hilburn manned the shortstop position last season, while also leading the Tigers in several offensive categories. Also seeing time on the infield will be Bradley McKeever (So), Corbin McCarty, Lane Rogers (Jr), and Tonka Hemingway at first base. Smith will also see time on the infield when not pitching. Mac James (So) and Lane Rogers will handle the catching duties for the Tigers. Both have experience in catching from last season.
In the outfield, the Tigers return a couple players who contributed last season in Zack Lee and Dylan Hanes, both started for a good portion of the season. Also seeing time in the outfield will be Batten, Spangler, and Pruett. There will be some other key contributors moving up from the JV baseball program in filling some vacated positions by seniors.
As always seems to be the case, the Tigers success will depend on good pitching and defense, staying healthy, and timely hitting. Several of the leading hitters from last year’s team returns in Smith, Hilburn, and Hemingway. They will be surrounded by several others who gained valuable experience hitting in the lineup last year. Region VI-5A is shaping up to be another quality year with tons of pitching. The addition of St James will only make this region tougher than ever. The Tigers are eagerly awaiting the season to begin, where they will open the season participating in the Coastal Invitational down in Pawley’s Island.
