2018 Team Outlook –
St James looks to rebound from a disappointing 2017 season that included some key injuries and a mid-season 9 game losing streak. The sharks rebounded to finish the season on a strong note, winning 8 of their last 12 games and defeating #1 ranked Hartsville in the opening round of the District playoffs.
St James returns 14 players, 7 starters, and six big arms. The team will rely heavily on the experience of its largest senior class since 2011 (11 seniors). Up the middle, the sharks will be strong returning unsigned 2017 Region POY catcher Trystan Freeman (SR) behind the plate, Jacob English (SR) South Carolina and Cameron Dean (SR) Florence Darlington Tech up the middle, and four year starter Harrison Scott (SR) unsigned in centerfield. Freeman led the sharks in almost all hitting categories .398 avg, 4 hrs, 28 rbis, 36 hits. English fought through an injury most of the season, but came on hot leading the team in stolen bases and bring a spark to the sharks’ late season resurgence. Dean looks to bounce back after missing the 2017 campaign due to an injury. His bat, defense, arm, and leadership were a vital part of the state championship run made by the team in 2016. Scott brings experience to the outfield as a 4 year starter and is a speedster in the lineup.
Leading the returning pitchers is Coker signee Anthony Peck (SR). Peck was an all-region honoree and had a 2.57 ERA with 49 K’s and 11 BBs on the mound. Tyler String (SR) New Haven University signee returns 30 valuable innings from last season and also batted .323. Nick Bray (SR) had a breakout season in relief winning 3 games and posting a team low 0.95 ERA. Ethan Salak (FR) has electric stuff and logged some varsity innings as an eighth grader last year. He will be in the mix for a rotation spot and be a major follow in 2018. Cam White (SR) is another solid returning arm (2-1 with 3.51 ERA) and the 6’4” hard throwing Cam Dean (SR) Florence Darlington Tech signee will be the sharks closer. St James opens the 2018 season in the prestigious Coastal Invitational Tournament in Pawley’s Island.
